Vector Linux to the rescue

After giving up on Ubuntu, I took Stuart's advice and found a Damn Small Linux distro, Vector Linux. I made it through the quirky installation process just fine. It recognised the network, and it is fast and easy to use, easier than Ubuntu. A defunct and ancient computer is now humming along fine, allowing visitors access to the net and simple word processing. I am so impressed.
