She said the greatest threat to the animals was urbanisation, particularly in areas from Port Stephens, in NSW, to Gladstone in Queensland.

"I think you can confidently say there'll be no koalas in 10 years," Ms Tabart said.

She said 25,000 koalas had been killed in four Queensland shires alone from 1995 and 2005.
